Winspit Quarry is an old stone quarry on the Dorset coast.
The exposed cliffs and sea air create a powerful atmosphere and the caves
provide a haven for quiet acoustic recordings.
Quarry History
Winspit is a former stone quarry, once part of the network of Purbeck quarries that supplied limestone for building across the region. The caves and cut faces seen today are not natural, but the result of years of extraction, where blocks of stone were removed from the cliff.
Work here was hard and exposed, with quarrymen cutting into the rock close to the edge of the sea. The marks of this labour remain in the walls and ledges, giving the place a distinct character shaped by both industry and landscape.
Over time, the quarry was abandoned and gradually reclaimed by the elements. Wind, sea and weather have softened its edges, turning it into something quieter and more reflective.
Today, it sits between its past and the present — a place where traces of human work remain within a much older natural setting.
Why I film here
Winspit has a raw, exposed quality that naturally strips things back. There is very little to hide behind — just stone, sea and wind.
The caves themselves have been used over generations as shelter from the elements, offering protection from wind and weather. For many, they still serve the same purpose today — a place to step out of the open coast and find a moment of stillness.
The sound behaves differently here. It carries, fades, and returns in subtle ways, shaped by the rock and the open space. That changes how the music feels, making it quieter and more reflective.
Filming in places like this removes distraction. It becomes less about performance and more about presence — capturing a moment as it is, rather than trying to shape it into something else.
This is what draws me back. The simplicity of the setting, and the way it allows the music to sit within the landscape.
